About Us
Samatvam Endocrinology Diabetes Centre, or SEDC for short, is an institution that specialises in treating and managing diabetes and other endocrine metabolic disorders. We have three core areas: treatment, education, and research. Every year we treat around 10000 people with diabetes and endocrine disorders in our outpatient clinic.
Treatment
Samatvam serves children and adults with diabetes and other endocrine metabolic disorders from the city of Bangalore, various other parts of Karnataka, neighboring states, and even other parts of India. Referred overseas patients also seek Samatvam’s patient care services through annual visits and online consultations. Comprehensive and continuing care (including primary care for desiring patients) and annual health reviews are provided under one roof, with further speciality referrals to eminent doctors and medical centers of Bangalore , as per need. A large number of people with type 1 and type 2 diabetes are treated at our centre. Treatment is both for those with newly diagnosed diabetes as well as for those with late complications. For in patient hospital and emergency care, we work together with several leading secondary and tertiary care hospitals of Bangalore, where Samatvam doctors (Dr SS Srikanta, Dr A Sharda and team) serve as Senior Consultants. Fully integrated electronic patient medical records have been used in the clinic since 2003. The goal is to serve not only the patient, but the entire family, as well as all socioeconomic segments of our society.
Education
Samatvam runs educational activities for both patients and their families, and for those who treat them. Beginning 1986, Samatvam has pioneered several innovative programs for patient health education, including “Diabetes self care basic” and “Diabetes self care intensive” – 2 periodic structured modular self care training programs, training India’s first diabetes specialist nurse educator and first diabetes foot specialist – podiatrist, developing a range of socioculturally relevant learning resource materials for patients and families, conducting residential camps for children and youth with diabetes, conducting monthly non-residential diabetes health and awareness camps in the community (perhaps the largest number of camps in the world for any diabetes care institution), dissemination of health knowledge through mass media (print, TV and electronic) etc. A large number of young doctors, postgraduate students and health counselors have undergone fellowship, observership and enrichment training at our institution.
Research
Samatvam’s faculty have extensive research experience beginning 1978. Dr. SS Srikanta has made unique clinical and basic research contributions in the field of diabetes endocrinology, serving in the highest centers of medicine and science in the world (Duke University Medical Center, Joslin Diabetes Center, Harvard Medical School, USA), and India (All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi). Realizing the contemporary India’s needs, currently Samatvam focuses on socially relevant and economically feasible clinical research to improve the overall health care and well being of people suffering from diabetes and other endocrine metabolic disorders. Thus the major thrust areas are preventive diabetology and cardiology (including the importance of life style changes and “Spiritual Medicine”), and cost effective diabetes health care delivery.
